Types of Grants
A grant is money awarded to you for the purpose of paying for college. The money does
not have to be paid back. Grants can provide a foundation of financial aid upon which
other funds may be added.
There are five types of grants offered at BSU:
- Federal Pell Grant
- Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
-
National Science and Mathematics Access
to Retain Talent (SMART)
- Federal
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
- Leveraged Educational Assistance Program
(LEAP)
All of these are awarded based on financial need. Financial need is based
on the information you provide on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Grants are only awarded to students who have not earned a bachelor's degree.
The amount awarded by the Pell Grant varies every year, depending upon
federal program funding.
It also varies with the number of credits you take in a given semester.
The ACG and SMART grants were recently established
for for implementation beginning the 2006-2007 financial aid year.
This link will provide you with specific information.
SEOG and LEAP grants are smaller funds than the Pell, but can be awarded in addition to
the Pell amount. You must be enrolled in at least 6 credits to be eligible for these
grants.
You automatically apply for these grants when you complete a FAFSA.
