Non-Resident Tuition Assistance Programs
Boise State University offers merit-based tuition assistance programs for our non-resident students. There is no separate application for these particular scholarship programs. For priority consideration, complete and submit all admission materials by February 15th for Fall 2010 entrance.
After February 15, or for Spring Semester admission, qualified individuals will be considered on a space-available basis. Submit all admissions materials by the admission deadline for the semester you want to begin taking classes.
Gem Scholarships
All students whose admission materials are received by February 15th, possess an outstanding academic record, and who are not residents of Idaho will be considered for a Gem scholarship (please assure your residency information with the Admissions Office is accurate). After February 15th eligible individuals will be considered on a space-available basis. This scholarship waives the total cost of the non-resident portion of tuition.
Students who meet the following criteria will be considered. Final selection for the GEM program is competitive.
- Entering Students who are new freshmen with at least a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA. (Preference will be given to students with a 21 or higher on the math portion of their ACT or 500 or greater on the math portion of their SAT)
OR - New transfer students who have earned 14 or more semester college credits and have at least a 3.0 cumulative college GPA.
- AND
- Are interested in any of the 190 Boise State University fields of study open to GEM participants. Most majors are open to GEM students, only those that are over enrolled are closed to GEM participants. These include Nursing, Pre-Nursing, Radiology, and Pre-Radiology. These programs are subject to change.
GEM Grad Scholarship
All students whose admission materials are received by February 1st, possess an outstanding academic record, and who are not residents of Idaho will be considered for a Gem Grad scholarship. After February 1 eligible individuals will be considered on a space-available basis. The GEM Grad scholarship waives the total cost of the non-resident portion of tuition.
Students who meet the following criteria will be considered. Final selection for the GEM Grad program is competitive.
- New students (individuals who have attended Boise State University previously, either as an undergraduate or a graduate student, are not eligible)
- AND
- Have a permanent residence outside the State of Idaho (both international students and US citizens are eligible)
- AND
- Have a GPA as an undergraduate of 3.0 or higher
- AND
- Are interested in any of the 75 Boise State University Graduate Programs open to GEM GRAD participants. Most majors are open to GEM GRAD students, except the on line Education Technology program and the on line Instructional Performance Technology program. These programs are subject to change.

Western Undergraduate Exchange
All students whose admission materials are received by February 15th, possess an outstanding academic record, and who are not residents of Idaho will be considered for a Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) scholarship (please assure your residency information with the Admissions Office is accurate). After February 15th eligible individuals will be considered on a space-available basis. It allows students from participating states to attend Boise State at a reduced rate of the out-of-state portion of tuition.
Students who meet the following criteria will be considered. Final Selection for the WUE program is competitive.
- Entering students who are new freshmen with at least a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA. ACT and/or SAT scores are also considered in the selection process.
- OR
- New transfer students who have earned 14 or more semester college credits and have at least a 3.0 cumulative college GPA.
- AND
- Are residents of one of the 14 participating states which are: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming.
- AND
- Are interested in any of the 190 Boise State University fields of study open to WUE participants. Renewal of Awards
Recipients of Gem, GEM HT, GEM Grad, or WUE scholarships may qualify to have their awards renewed for up to 4 years or 8 semesters (except GEM Grad which is for 2 years or 4 semesters) as long as they continue to make reasonable progress toward a degree and meet the minimum GPA and credit completion requirements. Detailed renewal criteria can be viewed on BroncoWeb by browsing to "Accept/Decline Awards" and clicking on the individual award. Changes in residency status and major will affect certain awards.
- Gem Scholarships: Completion of 24 credits during Fall/Spring semesters with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and remain in a major open to GEM participants. Over enrolled majors are closed to GEM participants. These include Nursing, Pre-Nursing, Radiology, and Pre-Radiology.These programs are subject to change.
- Gem HT Scholarships: Completion of 24 credits during Fall/Spring semesters with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and remain in a major open to GEM participants. Over enrolled majors are closed to GEM participants. These include Nursing, Pre-Nursing, Radiology, and Pre-Radiology.These programs are subject to change.
- Gem Grad Scholarships: Completion of 18 credits during Fall/Spring semesters with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and remain in an eligible degree field. These programs are subject to change.
- WUE Awards: Completion of 24 credits during Fall/Spring semesters with a cumulative 2.0 GPA and remain in a major open to WUE participants. Over enrolled majors are closed to WUE participants. These include Nursing, Pre-Nursing, Radiology, and Pre-Radiology.These programs are subject to change.
