If you have been following recent news about budget neogiations in the U.S. Congress, you may be aware that there have been several budget deadline extensions for the current fisical year. Without these extensions, "non-essential" government operations would come to a halt until a budget bill is passed.
The budget for this current fiscal year is also what determines the level of funding for federal aid programs, including the Pell Grant, for the upcoming academic year of 2011-12.
Take Note!
The Pell Grant amounts that appear on the 2011-12 financial aid awards at this time are based upon estimates provided by the U.S. Department of Education. The U.S. Congress will determine the final amounts available to students based on their EFC (Expected Family Contribution from the FAFSA).
Federal funding has been eliminated for three grant programs for the next academic year (ACG, SMART, and LEAP grants). Other aid programs are included in the budget debate described above.
All colleges are required to award federal financial aid according to the laws passed by the U.S. Congress. Thus, we will be required to adjust financial aid awards if Congress changes the funding strategy. You will be notified if your financial aid package is impacted by further reductions to federal aid programs.
Any thoughts or opinions you may have on this topic are best addressed to your senators and representatives in Washington D.C. who are serving your state.
