Loan Counseling

Loan entrance and exit counseling is intended to assist students with understanding of student loan basics, repayment, and responsible borrowing.

First time borrowers:

Complete Required Loan Entrance Counseling & Master Promissory Note

Details

First time borrowers are required to complete loan entrance counseling prior to receiving loan funding. If you have not previously received a subsidized/unsubsidized loan or graduate PLUS loan, you will need to follow steps below. The tutorial takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Your Master Promissory Note (MPN) is your agreement to repay your loans. It also communicates important terms and conditions about your loans. You are required to sign the electronic document before receiving loan funding.

How?

  1. Visit studentloans.gov
  2. Login using your FSA ID
  3. Select “Complete Loan Counseling (Entrance, Financial Awareness, Exit)”
  4. Click “Start” next to Entrance Counseling
  5. Under “Add School to Notify”, search for Boise State University and select.
  6. Click “Continue” to begin the tutorial and complete all pages.
  7. If you haven’t already done so, complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN) – also on studentloans.gov. Return to the main menu (Step 3) to select.

When?

We recommend completing loan entrance counseling when you accept your loans. It is encouraged to complete loan counseling prior to the start of the semester when you will receive your loans.

After completing loan entrance counseling successfully, Boise State is notified within 2-3 days. Monitor your Student Center To Do list to make sure the “Loan Counseling” item clears automatically.

Students graduating, withdrawing, enrollment below half-time:

What if I'm coming back to school?

We still strongly encourage you to complete loan exit counseling. You will learn valuable information about repayment, your current balances, and how to manage your current and future loans.

Why was I notified about Exit Counseling? I took loans at Boise State years ago.

By federal regulations, Boise State University must notify students of the Exit Counseling requirement if they received loans at Boise State anytime in the past. When you enroll less than half-time or withdraw, we must send notice of Exit Counseling information. If you have paid your loans in full (have $0.00 current balance) or completed exit counseling previously, you may disregard the messages. You will still be eligible to receive transcripts, enroll in classes, etc.
